On the island's firing ranges, 80 percent of all bombs detonated in Italy are fired by both the Italian army and NATO allies. 35,000 hectares of land are restricted military areas and serve, among other things, as training grounds for the troops.

But that's not all. The island is also home to a weapons factory that has been controversial for years: RWM Italia S.P.A., a subsidiary of Düsseldorf-based Rheinmetall AG, Germany's largest weapons manufacturer.

Unemployment in Sardinia is very high. Rheinmetall provides 300 jobs with its weapons production here. But most of the employees find it intolerable that in order to feed their families they have to help produce something which elsewhere makes children orphans ...

A loophole in European laws allows weapons produced here to be supplied to Saudi Arabia to be used against people in Yemen.
